European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
